Windows 10 End of Life: Key Considerations for Businesses

Updated: Feb 26

As the end of life for Windows 10 approaches in October 2024, businesses should plan now for the upcoming changes

A significant date to remember is October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will no longer offer free updates, security fixes, or technical support for Windows 10. This is important for over 69% of desktops and over 60% of laptops worldwide that use this operating system daily. After October 14, 2025, if you continue to use Windows 10, you may encounter numerous issues, such as:

  • No security updates

  • Substantial risk of malware infections

  • Software compatibility issues

  • Compliance concerns for businesses

While this situation may initially appear non-concerning, further examination can reveal additional potential problems and concerns over time.

Options For My Business

To upgrade to Windows 11 version 24H2, you can download the free update through the Windows 10 settings. First, navigate to the "Windows Update" section. If a message indicates that the Windows 11 upgrade is available, click "Download and Install." Please note that the download, installation, and reboot process may take some time. Once completed, follow the prompts to finish the installation upgrade.

Microsoft PC Health Check Application

Microsoft offers a downloadable application called the Microsoft PC Health Check. Once downloaded and installed, this app will inform you whether your computer can run Windows 11. For the official Microsoft PC Health Check app, you should visit the Microsoft website directly, rather than downloading it from a third-party website.

Evaluate Business Hardware

Given the lack of a confirmed release date for Windows 12 and the eventual end-of-life for Windows 11, it may be prudent to assess the condition of your computer's internal components. While the typical lifespan of a computer can range from 3 to 8 years, depending on the hardware, the actual usable lifetime may vary significantly based on factors such as usage patterns, maintenance practices, and specific user requirements. Furthermore, as a computer age, the risk of security vulnerabilities and incompatibility with emerging software increases, underscoring the importance of initiative-taking hardware evaluation.

According to recent data from IT asset management firms like Lansweeper, a massive portion of users, estimated to be around 50%, are unable to upgrade to Windows 11 due to their existing hardware not meeting the minimum system requirements. Fortunately, Microsoft will offer an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for one year for $30. This program will provide critical security updates, but new features, bug fixes, and technical support will no longer be available.
